To Leave Something Behind, by Sean Rowe

I cannot say that I know you well
But you can’t lie to me with all these books that you sell
I’m not trying to follow you to the end of the world
I’m just trying to leave something behind

Words have come from men and mouse
But I can’t help thinking that I’ve heard the wrong crowd
When all the water is gone my job will be too
And I’m trying to leave something behind

Oh money is free but love costs more than our bread
And the ceiling is hard to reach
Oh the future ahead is broken and red
But I’m trying to leave something behind

This whole world is a foreign land
We swallow the moon but we don’t know our own hand
We’re running with the case but we ain’t got the gold
Yet we’re trying to leave something behind

My friends I believe we are at the wrong fight
And I cannot read what I did not write
I’ve been to His house, but the master is gone
But I’d like to leave something behind

There is a beast who has taken my blame
You can put me to bed but you can’t feel my pain
When the machine has taken the soul from the man
It’s time to leave something behind

Oh money is free but love costs more than our bread
And the ceiling is hard to reach
Oh the future ahead is already dead
And I’m trying to leave something behind

I got this feeling that I’m still at the shore
And pockets don’t know what it means to be poor
I can get through the wall if you give me a door
So I can leave something behind

Oh wisdom is lost in the trees somewhere
You’re not going to find it in some mental gray hair
It’s locked up from those who hurry ahead
And it’s time to leave something behind

Oh money is free but love costs more than our bread
And the ceiling is hard to reach
When my son is a man he will know what I meant
I was just trying to leave something behind
I was just trying to leave something behind

After listening to it, it sticks to you nicely. Jack Owensby wrote:

“This tune from Sean Rowe’s song “Leave Something” has recently taken root in my heart and in my theological imagination. From these words came a longing that shaped my life, at least on my best days.

Wanting to leave something is in stark contrast to wanting to make a name for yourself. I have no interest in putting my name on buildings, hats or shirts. Making a splash and making headlines with my tweets doesn’t get me excited…

Leaving something out is none of my business. Rather, it’s about dedicating yourself to something greater than yourself. a commons. A world that will nurture and support others, including, especially, those who follow me.

Leaving doesn’t mean making me a better place in the world. It means making the world a better place for everyone…”

This tune from Sean Rowe’s song “To Leave Something Behind” has recently taken root in my heart and in my theological imagination. From these words came a longing that shaped my life, at least on my best days.

Wanting to leave something is in stark contrast to wanting to make a name for yourself. I have no interest in putting my name on buildings, hats or T-shirts. Getting attention and making headlines with my tweets doesn’t excite me.

The pursuit of greatness seems like a silly game to me. Don’t believe me reading the Tower of Babel story. An apocalyptic biblical hook sums up the motives of the hapless builders: “Let’s be famous.” (Genesis 11:4b) Their quest for greatness was mired in anarchy, alienation, and conflict. The same goes for all these efforts.

Leaving something out is none of my business. Rather, it’s about dedicating yourself to something greater than yourself. a commons. A world that will nurture and support others, including, especially, those who follow me.

Leaving doesn’t mean making me a better place in the world. It means making the world a better place for everyone.

In Christian parlance, Sean Rowe’s simple hook reminds me of the kingdom of heaven.

Jesus said that the kingdom of heaven is like mustard seed or leaven. A small mustard seed can grow a tree. A pinch of yeast can turn a pile of flour into a loaf of bread.

To get a tree, someone has to plant the seed. There will be no bread unless someone prepares the dough. Someone has to not only dream about what is possible, but also work hard to make it happen.

In other words, the kingdom is like a pearl of great price. Someone found it in a field and sold everything to buy that field. This guy is all in. whole-heartedly.

Well, here’s the thing about pearl value. There’s no guarantee that others will appreciate it as much as you. Like any investment, this is a risk.

Seeds, yeast and pearls teach us a lesson about possibility. Not inevitable. Things may not go the way we hoped. But Jesus told us to plant. rub. invest. Committing to the kingdom—trying to leave something behind—is not the same as hoping for something certain. This is an act of trust.

Trying to leave something behind is also an exercise in letting go. I am not a baker. But that’s all I know: at some point, you have to ignore the dough. If you mess with it, you will ruin it.

Dedication to heaven has nothing to do with sitting on our hands and waiting for God to do all the work.

However, Jesus taught us to do what we can and trust that God will work through other instruments in ways that we cannot possibly perceive.

I dream that people will live in a world where everyone’s work enables a dignified life. I dream of seniors and disabled people getting the support and care that everyone deserves. I dream of a world where everyone has access to quality healthcare.

I dream of a world where we value people more than profit, social status and property.

We do not currently live in this world. But this is the world I want to leave.
