Where to Shop For Your Boudoir Session (Victoria’s Secret is NOT on This List!)
You’re thinking about booking a boudoir session with me and my studio, or have already done so, and you’re probably going to be a little crazy. Maybe you’ve never done anything like this before, or maybe this is your third or fourth visit to my studio, anyway, the big question that comes to mind first is, “What the hell am I wearing?!”.
Somehow, it’s sometimes harder to be ready to wear less than to be ready to wear!
Maybe it’s because most of us aren’t used to frolic at things we can’t describe. Maybe it’s because most of us don’t have regular professional photo shoots on our calendars. Maybe shopping isn’t something you feel you’re good at. Whatever your reasoning, I totally understand.
I already have a blog post on what to wear to your boudoir meeting, full of links on where to shop, and a bonus post on the boudoir outfits you already have in your closet, but I want something else to add !
There’s a reason many wedding photographers also offer bridal boudoir photos as part of their services. A boudoir photo shoot is an empowering experience that allows you to meet your wedding photographer ahead of your big day and gives you a reason to buy bridal boudoir outfits and adorable lingerie. or even better? Your finished boudoir photo album is a great wedding gift to surprise your partner on your wedding day.
To get the most out of your bridal boudoir photos, it’s important to choose lingerie that makes you feel comfortable, sexy, and undeniably yourself. Shopping for bridal boudoir lingerie can be a particularly fun part of the wedding planning process, but with so many options to choose from, you might be wondering where to start.
Before your boudoir session, we asked seasoned boudoir photographers for their expert opinions on lingerie shopping. Below we share her advice, along with some of our current favorite bridal boudoir outfit ideas.
How to Choose Your Bridal Boudoir Outfit
From finding the right lingerie style to unique bridal boudoir outfit ideas, here’s everything you need to know about pre-wedding boudoir lingerie shopping.
Choose underwear that you feel comfortable with.
When choosing lingerie for your bridal boudoir, the basic rule is to choose the pieces you feel comfortable with, i.e. female-led patent leather garments,” says Eroula Dimitriou, boudoir photographer and owner of Eroula Dimitriou Photography in Northern New Jersey. Feel like you and stay true to your style because that’s when you feel and look your best. ”
According to boudoir photographers, the type of underwear you photograph best is your favorite. “If you’re comfortable and like the piece you choose, that’s definitely reflected in the image,” says Stacey Salerno, owner of Stacey Salerno Boudoir in Hampton Roads, Virginia.
If you’re nervous about dressing up in a bridal boudoir, remember that your photographer is there to help, relax and guide you. “At the end of your meeting, you’re wondering why you’ve waited so long and are already thinking about what to buy for your next meeting,” Salerno said.
Adjust if necessary.
If you’re not sure which type of underwear is best for you, visit a brick-and-mortar underwear boutique that offers fitting and personal styling advice. Trevor Sherwin of Provocateur Images Boudoir in Toronto, Canada, said: “I can’t tell you how confident people are when they walk into a shoot when they buy underwear that they know will fit.”
A visit to an lingerie boutique can also give you the opportunity to try different looks—a point Salerno emphasizes when helping clients prepare bridal boudoir photos. “I also recommend that they pick at least one piece that is outside of their ‘norm’ so they can see something they may never have tried before,” she said. “Usually these are her favorite pictures.”
Choose a style to create the hourglass shape.
When shopping for a bridal boudoir, Sherwin recommends looking for pieces that create an hourglass silhouette. “If it has angles that come in from the chest, stomach and buttocks, it creates the illusion of an hourglass. This can also be achieved with a ‘V’ shape,” he said.
If you’re looking for flattering lingerie that’s well photographed, you can’t go wrong with a sexy bodysuit, especially one with high-cut legs to show off your curves. “Low-rise underwear is a thing of the past,” says Julia Loglisci, a Victoria, British Columbia-based boudoir photographer and owner of Julia Loglisci Photography. “I always tell my clients to wear this thong no matter their body type! Show off the sexy crease between your thighs, it shows off your curves.”
Choose an underwire style – but only if you want more holding power.
Whether you’re shopping for a sexy bodysuit or a corset and matching thong, you should make sure your underwear provides the breast support you want. While boudoir photographers agree that underwire bras offer more support and shots (they give your curves an extra boost), it all boils down to what makes you feel sexiest and most comfortable. For some, this can be a corset or bodysuit with built-in underwire support. For others, it might be an elaborate cotton bra and panty set. There are no wrong answers.
Look for underwear with interesting details.
When choosing lingerie for your bridal boudoir photos, look for pieces with lots of lace-up details, embellishments, or accents that you won’t find in everyday lingerie. “The more detail, the richer the photo and the more visually exciting it is,” says Dimitriou. “Think lace trim, buttons, zippers, garters, thigh highs, lace trim, embroidery, and more.”
When in doubt, Sherwin says you can’t go wrong with classic bridal boudoir outfits like three-piece panties, bras and garter stockings. Best of all, after your boudoir party, you can wear your underwear again for your wedding night, honeymoon or other special occasion.
Add a personal touch.
To make your boudoir photos feel truly special and unique, Loglisci recommends wearing something personal. “Maybe your partner gave you special jewelry, or they have a favorite shirt or tie,” she says. “Afterwards, when your partner sees the photo, it will be interesting to see their reaction when they say, ‘Hey, isn’t this my favorite shirt?'”
If you’re worried about being nervous, wearing something that evokes your partner’s special memories will help you relax during your boudoir photo shoot. Having a small portion of your S.O. with you during the shoot will be reassuring and help you maintain a strong mindset.
Buy multiple looks.
Depending on the type of package you book, your bridal boudoir photo shoot will often include multiple looks or clothing variations. This is a great opportunity to try out a variety of bridal boudoir looks that suit your and your partner’s personal tastes. “I often recommend classic white bridal looks, slightly naughty bridal looks in black or red (or your favorite color), and fanciful looks like sexy schoolgirls, favorite characters, or even favorite sports teams theme,” says Candy Keane, former boudoir stylist and editor-in-chief at GeekMamas.
Before your boudoir meeting, try all the looks at home and organize them ahead of time. When the day comes, you’ll know exactly how your underwear will fit (and what to do with the tricky straps), which is crucial when relaxing in front of the camera.
