You fumble for your phone, staring at the screen as if you were hallucinating. Then press reply. The phone never rings, and you begin to suspect that he may have accidentally called you. However, before you pressed the end button, a voice sounded.

“So lonely.” Taehyung’s low voice sounded tired. Somehow, you get what he means without asking. After a moment of silence, it’s Taehyung’s turn to wonder if you’re still there.

“We screwed up, didn’t we?” you ask, looking at yourself curled up alone on the bed. There was a commotion and a chuckle on the other side. “Yes. You usually do.” You should be angry that he accused you, but he was right. After a short pause, you said, “Do you hate me?”

Taehyung thought for a long time, only to hear the howl of an owl in the distance outside the window. “…No, I don’t do that.”

“I’m glad.” You let it sink in, and there’s a comfortable silence between the two of you. It almost feels like he’s right next to you, breathing hard, the sheets sinking into his frame. The next time Taehyung speaks, you can hear the sadness in his voice.

“Please come back to me, it’s hard to sleep alone.”
