For more than a decade, since the sale of his investment management firm in 2008, David Tice has pursued many interests outside the public markets arena. He co-manages a precious metals equity investment management fund offering SMA and hedge funds. He is also working on a major documentary on the fragility of the grid.
Tice is best known for founding and managing the Prudent Bear Fund (BEARX) from 1996 to 2008. In the decade ending Aug. 12 when Tice sold the fund, BERX’s value has grown at an annualized rate of 7.97%, while the S&P 500 has lost 1.38% annually.
He is also known for his sponsorship of the September 21, 1999, credit bubble and its aftermath at the Waldorf Astoria, which made the front page of the Wall Street Journal the next morning. His “behind the numbers” research report on Tyco International prompted scrutiny from investors and regulators, ultimately costing the company tens of billions of dollars in market value.
Tice is also known as a promoter and financier for Soul Surfer, an inspirational film about Bethany Hamilton, a teenage Hawaiian surfer who lost her arm in a shark attack. The film earned an extremely rare A+ CinemaScore with positive ratings and grossed $100 million. Permabear David Tice released his latest market call: shares down 30% to 60%.
In an interview with CNBC on Wednesday, Tice said the current market reminded him of 1999 and 2006-07, the period before the major market sell-off, saying “VIX has been low and complacency is high.”
“From ’09 to ’14, the Fed was able to have a good recovery in asset prices,” Tice said, “but the trees didn’t grow too tall.”
Gold will benefit the most from falling stock prices, which will create a period of extreme volatility, Tice said.
Tice believes gold will be “well above” $3,000 an ounce in the “near future,” saying of the call, “I’ve never been so sure of anything in my life.”
Tice is the founder of Prudent Bear Fund, a mutual fund that, according to Federated Investors, “aims to help investors profit from falling U.S. stocks by providing the convenience of an actively managed bear fund.”
