Ron recently appeared in a Q&A with Western Suburbs Magazine.

Fifteen years ago, when Ron Onesti took over the Arcada Theater, this 1920s vaudeville palace in St. Charles was showing second-hand movies, abandoned and in danger of being converted into an office building. With the support of the community, Onesti has transformed Arcada into a popular live music and entertainment venue that has undergone major upgrades and expansion during the pandemic. Onesti, who lives in Wooddale, now operates several entertainment venues in the Chicago area, including the soon-to-open 600-seat Des Plaines Theater in Des Plaines.

You grew up in Northwest Chicago. What was your childhood like – what were your interests? Do you have any particularly fond memories?

RO: I was actually born on Taylor Street in Little Italy in Chicago and was taught the importance of family and neighborhood relationships from an early age. From the years we moved to the Northwest and the years that followed, I learned about the beauty of Chicago and its surrounding areas.

You go to Webb Gym and it’s closed. What activities have you been involved in? Don’t you work at school radio? Was this involvement in some way a prelude to your later role and career as a music promoter?

RO: When I came to Webb, I wanted to be part of everything. I’ve probably joined a dozen clubs! However, my involvement with the Student Council, WEBER radio and the baseball team has had the biggest impact on my journey on the road to producing concerts and special events.

They joined DePaul, who ran the popular Beatles cover group American English a few years later, before taking over Arcada’s operations in 2005. Briefly fill in the years in between – z What are the key steps along the way?

RO: During my years at DePaul Business School, I really learned the essence of entrepreneurship. During college, I dabbled in a variety of self-employment businesses, including print and screen printing businesses, doughnut shops, and advertising agencies. Because of my involvement with the Italian-American community in Chicago, I’m part of a growing holiday initiative launched by Mayor Jane Byrne. I was in charge of the entertainment for Italian festivals, which sparked my interest in “entertainment”. This led me to lead the famous Beatles tribute band American English. When the owner of the Arcada Theater didn’t answer my calls about the band’s regular concerts, I found out that the building was being converted into an office building. One thing led to another and I was able to restore it to its original 1926 glory. I am here today!

You really took a step of confidence when you took over the operations of Arcada. What is your biggest concern? How can a trip to a dream land in Iowa help?

RO: I played organized baseball from age 5 until age 33 and have always been a huge baseball fan. My wish list is to throw the ball to my dream place in Dylesville, Iowa, where the movie was filmed. My brother and I decided to go there one Sunday morning, which happened to be the weekend, and I should have decided to take over the theater. I’m not sure I should take the financial and emotional responsibility that comes with such a large place. But when we threw the ball, the “if you build it, they’ll come” thing hit me and I decided to do it. Everyone thought I was crazy, myself included, because it took a lot of money, time, energy and fingers crossed.

How hard was it to get bands and artists all the way to St. Charles in those early days? Were there any benchmark bookings or particularly popular concerts in the early years that made you think it would work, or that opened the door for other artists to enter Arcada?

RO: A large part of the industry not only has the money to afford these shows, but also has a reputation for the trust they get from booking bands. At first, I could only afford a tribute show, and maybe a few 1950s artists. But over time, my relationships with agents, agents, and entertainers have gotten better, and as ticket sales have grown, come bigger shows. My first show was probably one of my biggest benchmarks because I wasn’t sure people would accept Arcada as a live music venue rather than a movie theater like it has been for years. So I put together the original members of the Beatles tribute band I lead, American English, and Paul McCartney’s Wings (excluding Paul and Linda, of course). It’s a fantastic performance of the Beatles and Wings, and it’s really good! I knew then that I could do it.

Of all the artists you’ve worked with over the years, who do you know best? Have a good story to share?

RO: If you remember my earlier reply about Dream Field, I actually made friends with Kevin Costner by booking his band Modern West here. He actually burst into tears when I told him he was partly responsible for me taking over the theater. Paul Anka became Uncle Paul, Connie Francis became Aunt Connie, and guys like Bret Michaels, Carmine and Vinny Appice and many other 70s and 80s rockers became my close siblings. At the end of the day, they are people just like us, and when you earn their trust, they become lifelong friends.

Of all the concerts/shows you’ve booked or advertised, are there any particularly memorable — or even magical for some reason — and if so, which ones and why?
