Tom Celani, a Bloomfield businessman and original investor in MotorCity casinos, said on Thursday he would buy the bankrupt Greektown Casino and Hotel for $450 million.
The Detroit News reports Celanis’ attorneys will file a purchase plan with bankruptcy court this morning at WJR AM-760.
Before Celani’s bid, it appears that Greektown’s main creditor, lending giant Merrill Lynch, will take a majority stake in the current bankruptcy plan.
But Celani asked the bankruptcy judge to delay any decision for 30 days so he could review Celani’s proposal.
Majority owner, Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians filed for bankruptcy more than a year ago, in part to get its own funds to complete work on the hotel and expand the gaming space.
But those improvements left the casino with more than $755 million in debt.
Celani said his new plan would pay Merrill and some other bank loans, but not Sault Ste. Mary Tribe.
Greektown’s June sales were up 24.19% from the same month in 2008, while both MGM and Motor City saw sales decline.
